Relative pronouns

Today we have a short lesson on relative pronouns for you. They are commonly used in pairs both in the literary language and in the vernacular. Such pairs consist mostly of an interrogative pronoun in the first part of the sentence and a demonstrative pronoun in the second one.

 

💡 The subordinate clause precedes the main clause. 


…qılıçnı kem alıp kilsə, qızımnı şuña birəm dip əytte ... (Tatar xalıq əkiyətləre, “Tire Taqıya”) 

…he said “I’ll give my daughter to the one who brings me the sword…”


Niçek yazılğan, şulay eşlədek. (Fərit Ğilmetdinov, “Yılğanıñ borılğan töşendə”) 

We did it as it was written. 


Sin üzeñ qaydan kildeñ, şunda kit. (Tatar xalıq əkiyətləre, “Aq büre”) 

You yourself go back where you came from.


Awılda niqədər maşina küp bulsa, şulqədər yaxşırak, tügelme? (Nurixan Fəttax, “Kiçü”) 

The greater the amount of (agricultural) machinery in a village, the better, right?
